Pictured at right is a delegation from our Sister City of Gangnam-gu (or Kangnam-gu) District of Seoul, Korea, visiting downtown Riverside.

The language principally spoken in South Korea is Korean; English, however, is widely spoken as a second language, taught in both junior high and high school.

Seoul is the centre of South Korea, site of the 1988 Olympics, and one of the ten largest cities in the world. Its name is well-chosen, meaning ‘the center of everything’- and the city lives up to its description. About twenty-five percent of the nation’s people live there; nearly half of all the students in the country study 5B1 there; the arts, both ancient and modern, are amply represented.

Gangnam-gu is located in southeastern Seoul. The east side borders Songpa-gu at Tancheon and the west side borders Seocho-gu at Gangnamdae-ro. The south side borders Seongnam city, Gyeonggi Province at Mt. Daemo and Segok-dong. The north side borders Seongdong-gu at the Han River.

Korean food is an exotic and spicy experience, based around such distinctive tastes as garlic, ginger, soy sauce, red pepper and green onion. Amongst the possibilities are such famous dishes as pulgoki, better known as ‘Korean barbecue’, or kimchi, the piquant vegetable dish that finds its way into most menus.
